Lower Risk Gambling Guidelines

The Lower Risk Gambling Guidelines are for anyone who bets or gambles with money.

Evidence shows that these limits, when used together, will lower your risk of experiencing negative effects from gambling, also known as gambling harm.

People who follow these guidelines experience better health and wellbeing, and so do their family and friends.

How much?

So… how much can you spend?

Weekly take home pay Maximum weekly amount for gambling
$500 $10
$750 $15
$1,000 $20
$1,500 $30
$2,000 $40
$2,500 $50

How often?

Whenever you pick, only choose one day for all your gambling activity per week. This includes researching and planning what you will bet on as well as the actual gambling itself. Timeboxing your activity is important.

What type?

Use no more than two types of gambling a week.

Types of gambling (products) include pokies, sports betting, horse racing, casino table games (e.g. roulette, poker, blackjack, craps), online poker and slot machines, bingo, lotteries and scratch tickets.

For some people, these three guidelines may not be enough.

You should consider gambling even less or not at all if you:

  • have issues with alcohol or other drugs
  • experience mental health issues such as anxiety or depression
  • have a personal or family history of gambling harm.
