A guide for talking about gambling harm

Gambling is a hot topic in the media these days. A federal parliamentary inquiry into online gambling, several public inquiries into casino practices, and industry’s skyrocketing advertising spend – more than $309 million in Australia in 2022* – have fuelled media and community interest in the subject.

Why language is important

The stigma associated with gambling harm often discourages people from talking about it and seeking help. In fact, research has found that the shame and embarrassment people feel about their gambling-related issues is exacerbated by insensitive, judgmental and blaming language that suggests they have a defective character.

New guide to help reduce stigma

A new guide has been developed to assist media professionals and others to promote healthy, productive public conversations about gambling harm. It offers a better understanding of the issue and appropriate language for talking about it.

Reducing stigma: A guide for talking about gambling harm aims to:

  • explain the difference between problem gambling and gambling harm
  • outline the different types of gambling harm
  • provide examples of stigmatising terms and suggest alternatives
  • offer practical advice on working with people who have lived experience of gambling harm to share their stories.
