Self-care: combat stress and resist old habits
Practising self-care during periods of stress or boredom – when you may otherwise slip into old habits, like gambling – can help to reduce anxiety, improve your mood and general wellbeing.
Far from being selfish or self-indulgent, self-care promotes positive outcomes and increases your ability to care for others. The aim is to relax and feel good about yourself, and to avoid doing something you may regret.
Staying active is the best prescription to help combat anxiety, stress or depression.
Even a short walk each day will make you feel better, reduce stress and may help reduce the urge to gamble.
By being attuned to your emotional and physical wellbeing, and doing a healthy activity, you are investing in your own needs.
We’re all different, so there’s no ‘one size fits all’ approach; just choose an activity that helps you to reset and recharge.
Some suggestions include:
- eating healthy, nutritious food
- Trying a new healthy recipe
- going for a walk or jog
- cooking a special meal
- meditating or doing breathing exercises
- listening to a podcast
- lighting a scented candle that evokes a pleasant memory
- avoiding situations that may trigger negative responses
- expressing your thoughts and emotions
- doing something new or mentally challenging
- keeping your home clean and tidy.
